Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS), is the elicitation of muscle contraction using electric impulses. The impulses are generated by a device and delivered through electrodes on the skin in direct proximity to the muscles to be stimulated. The use of muscle stimulation can help reduce muscle spams, pain, sore muscle, and promote healing.
The most common uses for US were to decrease soft tissue inflammation, increase tissue extensibility, enhance scar tissue remodeling, increase soft tissue healing, decrease pain, and decrease soft tissue swelling. Other uses were to deliver medication for soft tissue inflammation, pain management and soft tissue swelling.
Ice or Heat Therapy maybe used in certain injuries and conditions to help reduce healing time. Ice therapy helps to create vasoconstriction of the blood vessels that helps in a new injury. Heat therapy is used most commonly in chronic conditions to create vasodilation (increase) of blood vessels to bring new blood supply to the area helping to reduce pain and promote healing.
